Choosing the right rug for horses spending time in the paddock is a challenge for many owners. Weather can change several times a day – from sunshine to sudden rain. In addition, horses in the paddock are very active: they run and play, which increases the risk of overheating during exercise. Yet when the temperature suddenly drops or a strong wind picks up, the horse’s body can quickly become chilled. Standard turnout rugs with fixed fill cannot keep up with these challenges, as they don’t respond to either temperature fluctuations or changes in activity levels.
That’s why we created the Winderen Thermoactive turnout rug line—rugs that actively adapt to both changing weather and your horse’s activity. They absorb, store, and release heat precisely when needed.
Available in two Zoom variants: winter (insulation equivalent to 100–350 g) and transitional (insulation equivalent to 50–200 g).

How does the Winderen Thermoactive turnout rug maintain constant body temperature?
Its unique ability to regulate temperature comes from Outlast® Technology – originally developed for NASA astronauts.
In Winderen Thermoactive rugs, we use special thermoactive materials that respond to changes in the horse’s skin temperature. When it gets too warm, they absorb excess heat. When the temperature drops, they release it again. It acts as a natural thermal buffer, helping prevent both overheating and chilling.
The thermoactive material is permanently integrated into the fabric structure, so its properties remain unchanged even after multiple washes.
This ensures your horse stays in constant thermal comfort, regardless of the weather and activity level – even during playtime in the paddock.

Extremely durable, waterproof, and breathable – ready when your horse needs it most
1680D Ballistic Nylon was originally developed for military use – engineered for extreme conditions and high resistance to damage. In Winderen Thermoactive rugs, it serves as the outer fabric, delivering maximum resistance to wear and tear while remaining lightweight and breathable.
The dense ballistic weave resists daily wear – from rolling, to playing with other horses, to the occasional nip. It is one of the most proven fabrics used in modern horse rugs.
In turnout rugs, the fabric is further reinforced with a breathable, waterproof PU coating with a 10,000 mm water column rating. It keeps out rain and moisture while allowing the skin to breathe, preventing overheating and internal dampness – ideal for changing weather.
Unmatched durability thanks to Climashield® filling
In our Thermoactive turnout rugs, we use exceptional Climashield® insulation – developed by an American company. Unlike common short, cut fibers, Climashield® is made from continuous-filament synthetic fibers, offering far greater resistance to clumping and compression.
This innovative solution ensures the rug retains both loft and heat-retaining properties – even after intensive use and frequent washing. When exposed to moisture, it dries quickly, while maintaining insulation performance.
Thanks to Climashield®, our rugs not only protect effectively against cold but also last much longer than traditional models.

Protection against chafingRugs often cause rubs, especially in horses with sensitive skin. That’s why we’ve added soft vegan fur in critical areas – shoulders and withers – to minimize the risk of rubbing. Its deep placement ensures full protection of the wither area, even during active movement.

The silicone cover is easy to rinse clean and doesn’t absorb moisture. Simply unclip and rinse under running water – in seconds, the strap is clean again.
Easy to maintainThanks to compression-resistant Climashield® insulation, all Winderen Thermoactive rugs can be machine-washed at 30°C without losing loft or insulating performance.
Dedicated turnout hoodFor complete thermal protection, you can pair your rug with a dedicated hood from the Thermoactive line. For the lighter Zoom 50–200 model, we recommend the matching Zoom 50–200 hood. For the warmer Zoom 100–350 variant, the 100–350 hood will work best.
What size Winderen rug should you choose for your horse?
All Winderen rugs are equipped with an exceptionally wide adjustment system, allowing them to fit horses that are up to 5 cm larger or smaller than the nominal size.
To make it easier to choose the right length, we have prepared a special fitting chart - our recommendations are based on experience with various horses of different builds and sizes.

- Before washing, fasten the Velcro straps on the rug.
